When Marco Polo met Kublai Khan, Khan requested 100 intelligent men schooled in the seven arts. (big mistake) The seven arts were: grammar, logic, rhetoric, geometry, arithmetic, astronomy and music. Rhetoric can be described as the use of language to convey an idea or persuade others. It can include literature, poetry and public speaking. Oratory is a division of rhetoric. Some of the early teachers of rhetoric were called Sophists. They fell out of favor when they began complaining about the lack of truth and honesty in oratory and rhetoric.
